Police: Three suspects arrested in shooting at CHP station in Champaign

CHP officers in Champagne County are investigating the shooting of a CHP sergeant who was sitting in a squad car.

Police say three suspects are wanted in connection with the shooting at a CHPS station in southwest Champaign County.

The suspects were seen fleeing the area around 10 p.m.

Wednesday near the intersection of S. St. Clair Avenue and North Highway 41 in the city of Champaign.

Police said officers responded to the scene and found a sergeant and a woman in their vehicle.

They later found the sergeant dead in the street.

A witness told police the sergeant was shot in the chest, and the woman was taken to an area hospital.

The victims were identified as Sgt. Christopher Foyt of the department’s emergency medical services division, who had been with the department since January.

He is survived by his wife, Kelly, and his daughter, Brittany.

The shooting occurred about 3 p.ms.

Wednesday at the intersection, according to Champaign police.

Officers were working an assault on a person when they were approached by a white vehicle, police said.

The sergeant was sitting on his front seat when the vehicle pulled up.

The driver exited the vehicle and pointed a handgun at the sergeant.

The driver fled the scene in a blue SUV.

The suspect in the vehicle then exited the car, police reported.

Investigators recovered two handguns and a handgun magazine from the vehicle.

The guns were found in a vehicle at the scene, according the Champaign Police Department.

Police are searching for a silver SUV and a silver sedan, both of which were rented in the area.
